Medical Laboratory Assistant / Technician
Program Objective
The Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician (MLA/T) diploma program is designed to prepare you for a challenging career in a medical laboratory or medical clinic. This 32 week diploma program is offered during the day and includes a 6 week co-op placement.
Six weeks of co-op placement combined with 26 weeks of classroom instruction ensures you graduate with confidence in yourself and in your theoretical and practical skills.
This program is only available at our Mississauga campus.
Certification
The Ontario Society of Medical Technologists (OSMT) offers a certification examination. The exam is offered twice a year, usually in June and November.
Graduates of our Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician diploma program are eligible to write the OSMT examination. Successful completion of this exam will allow students to attain the designation of ‘MLA/T’. Interested students must register and pay the examination fee to the OSMT (useful website: www.osmt.org ).
Clinical Placements
Algonquin Careers Academy has an excellent working relationship with various members of the medical industry. During the last 6 weeks of the program the student will supplement their in-class training with an “on the job” clinical placement arranged by Algonquin Careers Academy. The placement provides an opportunity to apply the lessons learned in the classroom, gain confidence, and open doors to future employment. The clinical placement enables us to provide front line experience for our students under supervision from the course instructor, who will visit the students in the locations to which they are assigned.
Successful completion of the 240 hours of supervised clinical placement is necessary for graduation.
