Medical Office Assistant

Program Objective

Do you like working with people?  The Medical Office Assistant program is designed to provide you with the medical, clerical, and communication skills necessary to start a career as a member of the health care team in a medical office. This course is a 30 week diploma program offered during the day and includes a co-op placement.

The 225 hours of co-op placement combined with 24 weeks of classroom instruction ensures you graduate with confidence and a familiarity with the use of medical terminology, office procedures, microcomputer applications, customer service and related skills.  Common job titles for students obtaining employment after graduation include: medical office assistant, dental office assistant, medical secretary, medical transcriptions, receptionist, and medical billing clerk.

Clinical Placements

Algonquin Careers Academy has an excellent working relationship with various members of the medical industry. During the last weeks of the program the student will supplement their in-class training with a “on the job” clinical placement arranged by Algonquin Careers Academy. The placement provides an opportunity to apply the lessons learned in the classroom, gain confidence, and open doors to future employment. The clinical placement enables us to provide front line experience for our students under supervision from the course instructor, who will visit the students in the locations to which they are assigned.

Successful completion of the 225 hours of supervised clinical placement is necessary for graduation.
